Short Response Four: Chinua Achebe

As a tribe, when celabrations come around, they all sit together drink wine, eat rich food such as bugs, and they tell stories of the good times that they remember or pass down. Also, they always stick together. If they dont like somethings, like the white men that approach them on horses, they go after them together. These practices say that they are a strong tribe and that they follow what they believe in.
Okonkwo is like a leader, he plans to rebuild after his exile to create a better life for his sons and himself. Within the customs of the tribe, Okonkwo sometimes stands off to the side because he does not believe in what they believe in, although he has always stood strong beside his tribe. for example, okonkwo did not want to kill his son and when he did he felt shameful or the time that he wanted to thank someone for the gift of yams, and they told him to kill his sons and then kill himself, he replied thats enough, i will not thank you no more. He does stand strong; however it fits the tribe good because it gives them stability.

Short Response Three Socrates

I think anyone today who tried to live like Socrates would not be alive for very long. I'm sure they could try to live like him; however, it would not last very long. If someone tried to live like Socrates, always trying to be cocky, not compromising with others, and saying that he is right to the court and there is no other way instead of giving them an apology. In today's society, that person would either be killed out on the streets because not too many people would like him or he would be put in jail for an unneccessary argument in court.

I know a lot of elderly people that I work with day in and day out within the hospital that are stubborn and very independent, but that is how they grew up and that's all they really know. Although, i dint think they exactly act like Socrates did and i don't think they would in front of a court either. In today's world, people might be stubborn and they might stand up for what they believe in, but when it comes down to a judicial court, they tend to back away to do whatever it takes to get out of court. also, people try to compromise with others, because it is the right thing to do and its just not worth arguing for.

Short Response Two "Culture and August Wilson"

Culture is a big deal in our world today. We see it everywhere. Everyone has their own beliefs, we value certain things, and we have our own religion. Cultures such as the African American culture has different beliefs and ways of living compared to an Indian culture. Each Culture creates different people and what they believe in. Jewish people do not have the same religion as a Catholic person. Everyone has their own styles and ways of living. some cultures are strict and some are not.

My Culture, from where i come from has shaped me to be a decent person. I was brought up from a polish background. My beliefs were strict yet somewhat relaxed. I was catholic and baptized. All of this shaped me to be a better person, not to lie, cheat, steal, or do drugs. My ways of viewing the world is open minded and i was taught not to judge.

Short Response One "Orwell and Identity"

My daily writing consists of memos and journals. I try to write down at the end of the day what experiences that I traveled upon and my reflections. Although somedays are too busy or I'm simply just too tired to write, I eventually catch up. The purpose of writing daily helps me reflect and learn daily lessons. It gives me a sense of peace and relaxes me.

One writing assignment that I have found interesting is a journal of my daily life and experiences. One of my professors graded a journal about our lives and what our reflections were, and I kept writing after her class had ended for that semester. I really liked it, not only did it teach me about the world but it taught me about myself.

Unit Zero

I like my first and last name because its unique and original. My name represents me in who I am and who I want to be. My father came up with my name and my mother went along with it. I have never not liked my name, I believe it suits me well. I love my last name because all the people I have ever met, no one I know of has it.

My name came from my grandmothers choice. She is no longer around, but everyone I have met that is involved with my dad and knew his mom and says that I look and act just like her. My nickname is cole, its short for nicole. I am polish from both sides of my family, both my mom and dad are polish. My last name has always stayed the same and I really don't want it to change. I would love if it could stay with me and be passed onto my children, although that's not possible.
